Onboarding flow for headphones that listen to how you hear, then build a sonic profile that’s unique to you






Introduction

Nura’s revolutionary products emit sounds into your ear and use NASA grade microphones to measure otoacoustic emissions (the tiny signals returned from your cochlea) which are then translated by the App to create a personalised hearing profile based on the tones you are sensitive to.


My role at Nura (acq by Denon)

  • 8 week contract working within Nura’s product team.

  • Improved the onboarding flow for creating a hearing profile with an iOS companion app. Created clickable protoypes to conduct UXR, communicate changes to executives, and work with developers.













Goals

  • Improve the existing onboarding experience by identifying usability issues and streamlining the user journey across Nura products. 

  • Create an import/export flow for adding hearing profiles created on other devices.

  • Update Figma design files to support engineering implementation with minimal lift.


UXR

Recommendations presented to key stakeholders for improved UX based on 5 user testing sessions:

  • Improve audio prompts and timing. The interaction between hardware, app UI and voice intruction is paramount to a quality first time experience.

  • Shorten the length of onboarding and time to hearing personalized sound by creating chapters that can be skipped (eg touch controls).

















Finding 1:  Improve out-of-box audio prompts 

When users first put on the headphones they are greeted with audio prompts guiding them through the initial set up, connecting to bluetooth, downloading the app, and creating a hearing profile.
















Finding 2: The onboarding flow is too long

We shortened the onboarding flow by condensing segments of the onboarding like the Touch Controls section so that they can be skipped in one tap, reducing the amount of time it takes to listen to personalized sound. These segments can be revisted later from the settings.
