Headphones that listen to how you hear, then build a sonic profile that’s unique to you

Introduction

Nura asked me to redesign their onboarding flow to ensure their users were recieving an experience as high in quality as the hardware.

The first time you use Nura headphones (acquired by Denon) they use highly sensitive microphones to distinguish your hearing differences and then tune the sound to match the way you hear. A personalised hearing profile is then available in the iOS app.

Key Improvements
  • Reduced the length of the onboarding flow.
  • Improved understanding of the hearing profile test by adding Audio Prompts and redesigning the UI to reflect them.
  • Improved understanding of the touch control features by redesigning that section of the onboarding flow and making it repeatable as a help item.

UXR
I facilitated user testing sessions in which we ran through the onboarding flow.

The results of the user testing and footage of each test were presented to key stakeholders with actionable recommendations for key improvements.

First time putting on your headphones
The headphones are expensive and users expections are high so a seamless out of box experience is paramount.

Users are greeted with audio prompts guiding them through the initial set up of connecting to bluetooth and downloading the app and creating a profile.

Creating a hearing profile

Audio prompts and cues guide the user through a hearing test which is a minute long series of beeps audible to the user. The headphones measure how long different frequencies take to return, much like a test for a hearing aid.

Once the test is finished, the user is presented with the opportunity to toggle between a standard profile and their personalized one to hear the difference.

Further customising your sonic experience

Once a users profile has been created, they are able to further custominse settings for noise cancelling, immersion, volume and social mode.

It was imprtant that users understood how to use and further customise their experience during the onboarding as app usage drops off completely after initial setup.

Onboarding the touch controls
There are four fully customizable touch inputs on each earbud, letting users control play/pause, skip track, change volume, and more. Users needed to know the basics and be able to dive deeper into the settings if required.
